Building something entirely new. Creating something fresh from something that existed. Evolving business to a new place. Changing a culture. True innovation. Standout success. Attaining influence or authority. Building a devoted following. Creating lasting relationships.
There’s one thing that all of these have in common…
You must invest something of personal value and worth.
It might be your ideas, your energy, or your reputation. Maybe it’s something tangible, like money or resources. Perhaps it’s a bit of all of those combined.
But leading – truly leading from within, not just sitting in a position of annointed leadership – requires an element of vulnerability that few are willing to risk. It means betting on your own hand, and being part of the things that you’re asking others to do with or for you.
If you have little invested, you have little to lose. And it’s hard to trust your intentions if you can’t be bothered to commit – and risk losing – something you value in the name of the thing that you want.
Let your team, your volunteers, your customers, peers and colleagues know what you’re willing to put on the line to achieve something. Don’t just work on a project. Don’t just build a plan and execute on it or delegate it. Invest in it. Personally and professionally. Put some skin in the game.
And let them see you do it.
Then watch how the game – and your own perspective – changes dramatically.
the crowd will only cheer when you have the courage to get on the court and take the shot. thanks, amber, for the push this morning…
This makes me think of the scene in Henry V when the king disguises himself and moves among the camp talking to his troops as one of them before the battle at Agincourt. It’s a special kind of leadership you’re talking about. The willingness to be the first at the frontline (so to speak). To lead not by pointing your finger and saying “over there” but by sprinting forward and blazing the path. Of course that’s also the scariest kind of leadership.
Thanks for the post, Amber, I really enjoyed this one. Although Shakespeare, monarchy and war references all before 9am makes me wonder what kind of day I’m in for 🙂
You must invest something of personal value and worth…is advice that applies not only to business but life in general. Although I do not have children, I imagine it would be a more powerful method of raising them than the old adage…do as I say not as I do.
Great piece, Amber.
Lead by getting out of your own way. Lead by heeding that burn in the pit of your stomach that far too often is extinguished by others’ opinions or self-doubt. The social web creates a lot of happy shiny people who should spend more time discovering true collaboration which is actually helping other human beings with real actual issues. Gutenberg shrunk the world, he did not invent writers. The Internet shrunk it again, it did not create human interaction. That’s up to us.
Skin in the game is finding your core purpose, not a higher Klout score or more Twitter followers. Skin in the game is about digging deeper when you don’t think you have any left and finding more. Skin in the game is offering someone help without any expectation of payback, ever. Skin in the game is finding a quiet place, removing all boundaries and digging as deep as you need to until you find out what you really want. Skin in the game is about bringing it for you, not for a pat on the head from others. Skin in the game is about being completely honest and raw with yourself, void of what “they” may think. Skin in the game is discovering why you’re doing it, not to whom you will sell it.
Amen. Was talking with a friend yesterday about this sort of thing: taking ownership and responsibility to do what’s needed to get where you want. Brilliantly put. Thanks.

Ok ok Miss Amber I got the message and have done just that with my new eBook. But thanks for bringing the point home. Game changing requires gust and courage indeed!
Just read your article and it was mind blowing. I always wonder how people achieve so many things in life and i have found out the reason.
