The questions abound with social media and marketing in a new communications environment.
How do I convince people that this is important?
How can I marry social media with my existing communication efforts?
How does this translate into sales?
How can we succeed with social media?
I have the answer for you. Are you ready for it?
Hard. Work.
Once again, I’ll say that social media isn’t an answer to your prayers. As Chris Penn so brilliantly said, it’s not a rescue for your failed business plan. It’s not a silver bullet or a pile of magic beans.
It’s strategic, focused work that requires research, preparation, internal education and training, careful selection of tools and tactics, a holistic business approach, and careful testing and analysis to figure out what’s appropriate for your business. There are challenges and risks. It takes time, resources, and commitment as well as a willingness to fail on occasion. It takes work, folks.
There are lots of talkers out there, telling you its as simple as “joining the conversation” or “connecting with your community”. And while those are important tenets of a successful social media-ready culture, it’s not enough to just say it.
The tactics will change, evolve, and adapt to your particular company, culture, and industry. But one fact will never change. There is no easy way or short cut. Social media deserves the same dedication you’d give any other important business decision, and you will absolutely reap what you sow.
Well said, Amber.
All too often the “secret to success” comes back to old-fashioned hard work and commitment.

I like that post. I think “hard work” is showing a genuine care and concern instead of just putting up information in hopes of reaping a profit.
People want to feel “loved” and that comes from nothing but showing genuine care. There’s no way to fake that.

Absolute, 100% agreement. The value of the tool resides in its use. The value of the use is up to you.

I absolutely agree Amber, it reminds me of a speech Joseph Jaffe gave where he talked about a lot of people in the social media space being in the ‘fireworks business’ – ie coming up with big bang, flashy ideas. But once the lights and smoke had cleared you were left with nothing.
I guess the whole issue of blogging is a good example. If you expect thousands (or even dozens!) of readers from the word go you are more likely on a hiding to nothing – it takes time and work to build up any kind of reputation among the seven million or so regular blogs out there.

Social media leaves brands nowhere to hide. They are part fo the conversation whether they like it or not.
To be successful is simple. You need to have a product with a competetive edge. Without a solid product you dont have a leg to stand on.

There is no silver bullet. Not in social media, not in marketing, not in pr. Everything takes planning. Unfortunately, so many clients put “stuff” way out in front of creating good strategy.

Hard. Work. – I agree completely with you on this one. The only problem comes when explaining this to clients or organizational leadership and the fact that many times they should take an active role in SM. It is imperative that we have buy-in and can show the benefits of engagement.

The underlying principles of success still hold true, and hard-work is the cornerstone. If you want to be a body builder then there is no escaping the fact you need a workout plan coupled with training hard – no matter what new workout machine is available. Learn-Plan-Execute.
