This blog is a passion project for me. It’s had the ancillary benefits of introducing me to amazing people, bringing me business, and making me think harder and more intensely about a lot of things than I ever thought possible. But when the chips are down, it’s the desire to express and share that brings me back to my keyboard again and again.
There are dozens of posts here that you’ll never see, mostly because they’re lost in the “Drafts” folder waiting for me to salvage them from their half-baked almost-there state. Some will be resurrected someday. Some will do nothing but gather dust.
But it’s important to me today to say something about you, the people that take time every day or every few to come by, and lend me your time and insights for a little while.
I’ve been writing for years and will likely be writing long after I have anyone to write to or for. But the truest and most compelling value to me in sharing what I think, learn, and seek to understand is when YOU are a part of this. I read every comment, I read every email I get, every DM and every reply on Twitter. I can’t always respond to them all, but each and every one matters to me. Because it reminds me that you’re out there, not just listening, but sharing among yourselves and with me and with each other.
That’s what we’re doing all this craziness for in the first place.
So I’m turning the stage over to you. I want you to leave comments, but not for me this time. For everyone else that stops by here and reads.
Tell me what makes you who you are. What you’re passionate about. Why you’re on this rock, working your butt off every day. Link to your blog, your stories, your photos. Especially you lurkers that never say a thing…I know you’re out there. Share with us.
I want to know your passion projects, and I’d be honored if you’d take a moment here in my sandbox to do it. Are you game? I’m listening.
Hey Amber,
Thanks to all this social media stuff, I’m not spending hours and hours spilling my guts on what moves the needle for me – hockey.
I speak my mind on more “global” hockey views at http://www.nhldigest.com, and blog specifically about my favorite team at allhabs.blogspot.com. Thanks to the adminstrators at each site, they’ve granted me online real estate to post my ramblings. I could have always started my own blog, but this came up first and all of the heavy lifting in setting up the site was already done.
I’ll forever be grateful to these guys, and to twitter because I connected with them both this way, otherwise my thoughts (and apparently I have many!) would have stayed in my head! It’s a start for me as a novice writer, not to mention a big time consumer, but when you can’t help yourself, I guess that’s when you can call it a passion, right?
Thanks,
Kyle

Learning new things and imagining what might be are big drivers for me.I am passionate about giving back to an industry that has give so much to me. But in the end it is the love of my amazing wife and wonderful family that motivate me every day and nourish my soul.

Passion–helping people change their minds, one neuropathway at a time. When we all reach for what resonates, dabble until we come alive, and shine so that others may find their way, the planet rocks on a grander scale. From finishing that novel that’s been tucked away in a drawer, to getting along better with your kid, to reframing corporate decisions about community and authentic communication. It all counts, and it all matters. Every bit of it.

Hi Amber,
Been reading for many months (thats a long time these days!) and love what you write, so it’s great to be given this opportunity to say a little about ourselves.
For me, I live to create experiences that transform people. Whether for clients, for the youth that I work with and intern with me, or for the people I encounter along the way – experience is everything.
One experience can change a life forever. It can alter a destiny and twist the arm of fate. One moment of clarity can bring freedom, and one moment of exposure can illuminate the mind for life.
Is there really anything else I’d love to spend my day doing?!
Thanks,
Scott

Want to know why I so needed this blog post at this moment?? Simply because of the title….and the passion behind your post. We all have something we are passionate about, and sometimes we let it sit long because we are afraid of another’s perception, or we just have to get it “right”.
If you are passionate about something, other’s will know simply by your tone and your action and your commitment to that thing. And if they don’t, then so what. As you said Amber, you will still write long after people have gone because that’s what you do.
Thanks for that spark! Now I will continue to go and do me 🙂

I enjoyed reading your work well before I had the wonderful opportunity to meet you. Now that I have, this post is so you.
I’ve tried to help lead the renaissance of Detroit with a bunch of other great and talented professionals through mentoring and sharing what knowledge I have. I’m proud of the podcast series I co-created which linked below.
Thanks to you and all the wonderful people I’ve met because of twitter, I continue to challange myself, push myself, and bring along as many people as possible in the process.

Dear Readers of AltitudeBranding.com,
I’m passionate about meeting people like Amber. If you’re helpful, knowledgeable, witty, and brilliant, I’d love to meet you. I devour her content, as well as many other marketing, social media and higher education-related blogs. I love connecting with people online with similar interests, career focuses, and finding new ways to be helpful to each other.
I’m passionate about the university I work for. I’m an alum, and have worked here over 11 years. I love spreading good news about our university, and social media has been a great outlet for me to listen and join in on some conversations happening that help prospective students and their families navigating the tricky college search waters. I love learning about new tools and finding ways to be even more efficient.
I share tips and discuss hot topics on a higher education marketing and social media blog called http://doteduguru.com. I present at conferences to share projects I’m working on and talk to people about ways to overcome the stereotypical bureaucracy at many institutions to get projects done, and done well. I love to brainstorm to find creative solutions to challenging problems.
I work my butt off because I love what I do (most days!!) and who I do it for, as well as higher education.
Huge thanks to Amber for this post and for producing such thought provoking and insightful content.

That kind of commitment to excellence makes you a special talent Amber. I would imagine you are constantly sleep deprived as well though.
Reading, writing, and listening is a 1.5 type of job (full-time+half). I’m figuring out still how I can balance The Lost Jacket when work begins to come in more heavily. I’m trying to use you as a model Amber :).

@Stuart – those are really kind words. Thank you. I do sleep (The big CB has cornered the market on not sleeping), but my brain is always busy, and I need outlets. That’s why my job is the perfect kind of outlet for me. 🙂
And I’m inspired by the passion I see in you for what you do. You just keep on keeping on.
I think the internet (and the soc media child)is too powerful to leave to the digirati. It is a game-changing platform for every business and not just an opportunity for ‘internet businesses’.
So – I come to places & people like this to learn how that brave new world works. Then I translate… and devote my life to:
Making it (the net) real & meaningful for ‘real’ businesses and turning small business owners into entrepreneurs & achievers.

My passion is, and has been for a long time, public safety. Specifically law enforcement, which has a huge opportunity to work towards not only correcting public misperceptions about police — or at least opening a dialogue with the public when things go horribly wrong — but also working together with the public to prevent crime (crowdsourcing public safety).
Amber, you’re one of the cool kids who lets everyone into the sandbox to play if they want to. Thanks for being our cheerleader.

My passion is my family. After voluntarily leaving an unfulfilling career and managing the renovation of my house (including doing a lot of the work myself), I became a stay at home dad and, more recently, a blogger. I needed a creative outlet to replace what I was missing going to work, while connecting with other dads and moms to have a support network. It has been an interest adventure and will hopefully create some second career opportunities for me since I will eventually need to re-enter the workforce. Thank you for providing this opportunity, I look forward to your posts as they have been very helpful in my journey.

Hi Amber,
I’m passionate about art, education and entrepreneurship. Technology and art really make me giddy. I love sharing with peeps what I’ve learned whether I’m teaching an encaustic painting class or I’m leading The Savvy Collaborative (www.thesavvycollaborative.com) for creative women who dream of owning a biz or already own a biz. Community, networking, education, friendship, family, art…it all make for a juicy life full of purpose and worth sharing.

I’m passionate about passionate people. Like Rachel, I’m passionate about meeting people like Amber (and I finally did! more hang time is definitely in order sooner than later, missie!) . . . about connecting to others in this social media space, with similar interests and those with interests that can enlighten me.
I’m passionate about learning (any subject, really), and about teaching others not just stuff about social media, but about whatever it is they can learn from me. But I don’t really like the word “teaching,” I prefer “empowering,” because it implies making someone not just more knowledegable, but stronger and more confident.
… which leads me to one of my strongest passions — the English language. Written and spoken, I’m a total word nerd.
Other passions include volunteering and making my community better any way I can, especially by being involved in local chambers of commerce, which also means small businesses are a big passion of mine.
I also really, REALLY like LOLcats.

Awesome idea! I am passionate about:
1. The care and feeding of creativity.
2. Connecting people where I see win/win outcomes, whether via mass marketing, social marketing or to broker a deal.
3. Strategy – show me the nuts & bolts beneath the wrapping!
4. Cultural anthropology. Why people REALLY care about your brand fascinates me.

What a wonder idea and such a great way to say thank-you, Amber.
I have many passions, but tops is my family and making the best life I can – which since I seem to be having trouble finding a job seems as though I am failing at that.
With that, I have two new projects of my own (actually three) but two that are taking my main “work” focus. One will being zero income, but will help so many others out. The other, if my planning and numbers are correct will generate the same income from my last job as well as allow me to help those around me.
That’s my passions outside of God and music as I am a guitarist of 20+ years and play every Sunday in our praise band.

Funny I was just complaining that I no longer have passion for my day job. I just want to focus on my documentary and doing charity work for non-profits.
Three years ago we were blessed with a son with a rare condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (amc) which means multiple fixed limbs and joint contractures (think pretzeled limbs and low muscle tone). My son is extremely bright, just limited by his limbs. I am thankful every day for him. He renewed my faith in people and in fate. I have changed so dramatically in the last 3 years, I don’t recognize my former self. I am more tolerant, giving, somewhat patient and driven.
With my son Owen I am pursuing all the dreams that were just on paper. I am producing a documentary about his condition (www.amcdocumentary.org), bringing a little girl from Egypt with the same condition to the States for surgery (www.biglifebigspirit…needs updating). I have traveled the country interviewing families and found so much hope and love, it is overwhelming.
I used to be the rare person who could say they love their job. Now my side projects are what drives me.

I love anything creative, whether its Art, Music, Video or Tech.

Amber, your sincerity always moves me. It’s easy to become cynical as a marketer in this “cowboy” environment. Part of the reason I read your blog is because you are experienced, but not jaded.
And that’s actually what I’m most passionate about. Whether you are a client, colleague or friend, I’m moved and excited by honesty, empathy and straight talkin.’
My current passion project is trying to sort through out how to protect our firm’s culture (which I’d like to think has some of the values I described above) while we grow and change.
Since you are in charge of a “community,” some of your posts have touched on this. I look forward to hearing more about this from your smart and perceptive readers over time.

Your post made me all verklempt (i.e., teary and emotional)! How cool are you for opening the floor to your readers. 🙂 I know that’s what you do, but I love that you’re so happy to do it!
I have to be honest, I’m just now figuring out what I’m passionate about, but I know that I believe highly in the power of employee engagement and employer branding, that music makes my heart happy, and that building community is what’s going to get us through.
Thanks for letting all of us share! I’ve learned so much in the short time I’ve been reading Altitude Branding, and I’ll continue learning until this lil bloggy of yours goes away (which I kinda hope will be never). 🙂

As usual, Amber, you put the “social” in the “social web.”
Me? I’m passionate about being a father to my two sons and a husband and partner to my wife. They are the beginning and the end for me. And I’m lucky enough to still be passionate about what I do in my professional life ( http://www.linkedin.com/in/jphoff ).
Outside of those core pursuits, I’m passionate about photography ( http://www.jph-photo.com ) and wine ( http://www.snooth.com/profiles/JPH/ ).
I often tell people photography is not a profession for me, but it is a passion. It’s the creative outlet that lets my mind wander. And as a wine lover, I have one of the least refined palettes you can imagine. But I know what I like, and I love all aspects of wine.
Thanks for asking a simple but engaging question. It’s fun to read all of the responses.

Amber,
Thanks so much for the invitation to share my passions here.
My #1 web passion is my blog, The Marketing Fresh Peel. I write about marketing, but I try to squeeze the juice out of ideas and present concepts from different perspective.
Another passion right now is the Oklahoma Social Media Club. I have teamed up with another person in the state to create the first state-wide chapter of the SMC. Our plan is to connect the whole state online – http://www.oklasocialmediaclub.org – and then at select satellite locations for meetings.
My passions offline are a bit different, but overlap my online passions quite a bit.

This topic was so deep I actually read it first twenty two comments ago and thought about it all day. I am passionate about helping people, and people gathered into companies and organizations, to create messages that really connect with their audiences. (I’m an ad writer and creative director by trade.) Social media is one way to do that. I come here because social media allows me to listen–as you mentioned in an earlier post, Amber–and there is nothing like listening to transform the clever into the compelling. I also come here to learn. I thought I was coming here to find customers but I’ve realized that I came here to find allies.
I have a special interest in the arts–I have an MFA—and social media are built for the arts. Arts marketing is all about limited budgets and passionate networks, but many of my friends don’t know where to start. I hope to be able to help them. Thank you.

Thank you.
Hi Amber!
My passion is lying–well, telling stories in various genres such as horror and western that, with any luck, whisk folks away from their troubles for a few hours. I mean, it has to be a passion, right, since I could make more money workign at Wally World! Seriously, I love entertaining people with my books, and that is what I strive to do everyday, with every word and every tale.

Hi Amber
Although we just met last week – I have been fascinated by your thoughts and insights into social media and marketing – and the wit and enthusiasm which you so easily convey it with.
I am passionate about technology and the enormous potential it has to change and hopefully improve many aspects of the human experience. Just look at this blog – and the way we now communicate and connect with other people.
Mostly technology empowers the individual and allows us to make a difference in ways never before imaginable. Just look at all the other comments for amazing examples of this.
I co-founded mutinyware.com as a way to use my talent and make a difference to our customers, employees and community.
Thank You.

Saw this link on Twitter a few hours ago and it motivated me to organize some different but related thoughts that have been running around my head the last few days into a new blog post. So, thanks for the motivation on that front.
I’m passionate about education at all levels: for our children, higher ed (where much of my career focus has been), and increasingly thinking about the life-long learning space. The latter is quite easily facilitated and amplified by social media and thoughtful writers like you sharing your blog posts with the rest of us.
Not sure what pointing me toward following you on twitter, but that lead to reading your blog recently and I appreciate what you’re putting out there. Keep it up!
To me, one of the great things about social media tools is how it enables people to connect with, observe, or otherwise learn from the passions of others from different places. Speaking of which, another person I follow and appreciate but don’t yet know is Al Krueger here in Milwaukee. Have fun on his CometBranding show tomorrow. Cheers!

This is such a cool idea. Thank you Amber.
My passion is making my video artwork. I make short videos that incorporate live action and puppetry. What?? Well, I suppose that”s part of the problem. I don’t seem to fit well in any particular category. I’d love to just make my art but I have, all my life, never figured out how to do this. I have no product to sell and I probably should come up with a better business plan than “One day I’ll get that phone call and they will tell me what to do with my work” In the meanwhile, I went from freelancing to a day job at an elementary school working with special education – kindergarten to 3rd grade. I also teach art classes after school. I am grateful for the job and I love the kids I work with, but my passion and the best of me, lies with my art.

Great post Amber! Very positive and enlightening.
For me I am very lucky as I am presently combining my two professional loves. My brother and I own two web companies in Saint John, NB. One is Evolving Solutions – http://www.evolvingsolutions.ca/evolve/ which we have been doing for 8 years now. The other thing we do is we combine our love for the web and hockey and like Kyle (1st comment) we are very passionate. Being a former pro player and still being able to stay involved via social media is awesome. We have created a couple of communities for us hockey lovers who are trying to make the web and hockey click. Here they are:
http://hockeytweets.thehockeyzen.com Twitter website for hockey fantatics
http://thehockeyzen.com Online community for hockey peeps.
Amber, thanks for getting all of us to share our passions. Nice work!

Amber. Not sure how you continue to publish killer blog posts – thought provoking, insightful. Oh wait…this space is supposed to be reserved for what I (@djwaldow) am passionate about. (But…all of the above is still very very true).
I’m passionate about:
1. Putting a smile on people’s face.
2. Learning from others.
3. Teaching others.
4. Connecting with individuals.
I really try and do each of the 4 things above every single freakin’ day. Life is too short to not be having fun. I realize that there are times to be serious, but when I find myself not smiling…something is wrong.
Rock on readers. Rock on Amber.
Peace out.

Amber – I’m one of the lurkers. I’m a big fan of your blog but haven’t really commented before. Thanks for calling me out.
I am passionate about riding my bike, skiing and hiking with friends, exploring new places, and Georgia football. Go Dawgs!
This sounds cheesy, but I’m also passionate about social media. It’s like a creative outlet for me. It’s not really supported at my current job, so I am learning and participating on my own as much as I can, just because I like it and it’s interesting. I love that I’ve met friends and found mentors via Twitter and that I’ve discovered so many great voices and sources of knowledge. I think just the fact that I spend so much time reading and learning about social media (to the chagrin of my husband) is indicative of my passion for it. I’m not about to claim myself as an expert, guru, consultant, or anything else… but I truly enjoy it and continue to feel its pull. It would be great to have it be a part of my job someday, but for now I am happy just to be involved and learning.
My passions are what I’d otherwise be doing if I didn’t have to work to pay the mortgage – so I suppose my “passion mashup” would be riding my bike somewhere I’ve never been to while watching a Georgia football game with friends and Tweeting about it!
Thanks for the forum to share.

hi Amber I’m loving reading about these passion projects! Thanks for the post.
Right now my passion project is about mixing up creativity, the web, and the kindness of people to raise funds for a bunch of women in the Philippines and I have been overwhelmed with the generosity of others. My other passion project is also about seeing women make the connection between their skills, their creative ideas and technology to make a difference. There are some amazing people out there!

Totally without vanity, I am passionate about every single thing I do. Which is NOT to say that I’m the best at everything, or maybe even that I’m good at something..I guess that’s for others to help determine.
But I know that anything I spend my time on, from reading to gardening to writing, solving a problem, or helping my kids, I do with my whole heart. There is no “halfway” and there is no “off” button. If it’s worth my time, then it’s worth my whole, earnest attention. My drive can be off-putting, in truth.
So thanks for the reminder that those things we do [volunteering, baking, sewing, whatever] are our ways of leaving a mark, leaving a legacy. And inspiring others, as you’ve done here.
